Biscuit Feast #2

img_6795You might have notices that if I use berries in my recipes, it’s most of the time blueberries. I love blueberries. The consistency, the taste, the colour and you can make so many things with them. What is not to like?! Today I used them in the Biscuit Feast recipe. It’s the second Biscuit feast recipe. The last one had 2 varieties: ‘Raise your hand for Raisins’ and ‘Nuts for Coconut’. They were both super healthy. Today’s one is healthy too, but then without the white chocolate. You can easily decide not to add the chocolate, they will still be super tasty! They’re amazing with a nice cup of tea, but you can also have them for breakfast (ok, I’d recommend making them without the chocolate in this case..). One thing is for sure, when you’re feeling blue, I’m sure these will quickly cheer you up. Enjoy!

img_5821Valentine’s day is almost here, so I thought I’d give you a nice and easy recipe to make for you and your lover! ..or for the people you love and you want to share them with. Because that is what Valentine’s Day is for me, a day to celebrate love! Celebrate the love between you and you partner, you and your family, you and your friends or you and your guinea pig.. it’s all alright. I don’t like the commercial side of Valentine’s Day. The glittery hearts, sugary sweets and the teddy bears you have no idea what to do with. I rather make the people I love something nice, and put all my love in there. I’ll give them cards to express what I feel for them. Not that the 14th of February is the only day I’ll do that, but why not celebrate a day of love? This world needs all the love you can spread! Now make these easy no-bake chocolate hearts. They’re delicious.. and healthy!

Fed By Water

fbwI actually know about this restaurant for quite a while already. Somebody told me about it in the beginning of this year and then it was just on my hotspot list for ages. The reason is because at that time I looked it up it seemed like a hassle to get there. Silly me.. as when I looked again it turned out I can be there within 30 minutes by taking 1 train, from the opposite of where I live. Easy! My friend Pavla came to visit me that day. I didn’t see her for a long time, because she was traveling for quite a while. Before she went away we used to do some hotspot hunting together and it was very nice to go here with her.

fbw3The first thing I thought when I walked in was ‘what a cool place’! I immediately regret the fact that I only went here now. It’s all black and I would say it’s a mix between industrial and modern. It’s not very big, but there is enough space to sit very comfortable. The staff was so kind, as we took ages to decide what to get. Everything is vegan and it was just very hard to make a decision. When I’m at a place I really like, I always tell myself I should go again soon. The only thing is that there are always more hotspots to discover and my stomach can only take so much. Though, I must say I think about this restaurant a lot and I’m very sure I want to go again.

fbw2As a starter we ordered ‘cheesy balls’. They looked so nice, so much creativity on a plate. We shared all 4 of them and the flavours really came together. They also serve really cool 2 coloured bread. Not much later our main dishes came our way. It looked amazing! I must say that Pavla her food was a  bit tastier than mine though. Pavla chose this incredible vegetable dish what looked like a lasagna (if I remember well it was the ‘Parmigiana’) and it was so full of flavour, it was too good. I chose the ‘soy chunk skewers with bbq sauce and potato wedges’, as I wanted to choose something no other restaurant offers. The potato wedges were the best I’ve ever had and the salad was so crispy and fresh though, but the soy chunks were a bit tasteless. The only taste was the huge amount of bbq sauce on top. I still liked it because it was very chewy, so different and recently I like to try new things on the menu. We were sitting next to a big sign with all the desert written on it. I think that was very clever of them, because if there is a sign with ‘chocolate pizza’ next to you for almost an hour, you will order it. So we did. It was big enough to share and you can even divide it in 4 and still have a nice dessert each. It was deeeeeeelicious!

fbw4About Fed By Water. It’s located in Dalston, just across from the Dalston Kingsland overground station and they serve an authentic, traditional Italian cuisine. You can order soup, salads, pasta’s, pizza’s and some amazing starters. If you’re very hungry, I’d recommend the calzone as it’s huge! They also do something with live music. I can’t find anything on their website about it apart from that they’re working on it. Live music and vegan food sounds amazing though, doesn’t it? You can also get their food delivered and they do a catering service (what looks amazing btw!). More information about this you can find on their website.

Cheese / Raw Chocolate

cheeseCHEESE
Everybody was talking about it: Sainsbury’s vegan cheese! Then there was even a whole hype that everybody started to call it ‘Gary’. I really wanted to try it too, but didn’t know what Sainsbury’s was selling it. Later it turned out they sell it at the big Sainsbury’s, so close to where I live. I was so lucky when I got there and they just refilled all the different kinds. So I chose: grated cheddar-style, cheddar-style, cheddar-style with caramelised onion, greek style, original soft cheese and the garlic&herb soft cheese. I couldn’t wait to try them. I must say I was skeptical as not a lot of vegan cheeses are very good, though a lot of people were so enthusiastic about these. So I tried them all and I actually like it. Quite a lot! The grated cheese and the cheddar-style are melting very nicely over a pasta and they are perfect to make grilled cheese sandwiches. There was not a really good cheese to make those with. I’m happy there is now. You have to make sure not to put too much cheese on it, as they melt almost too well. The soft cheeses are very tasty too, lovely on a cracker or a rice cake with some cucumber and black pepper on top. But if I have to choose I think the ‘greek style’ is definitely the best. It tastes like feta, it crumbles like feta and is amazing in salads. Because not all Sainsbury’s sell it, you can also order it via their website. Way to go Sainsbury’s!

pcRAW CHOCOLATE
My friend Pavla lived in Cornwall for a few months over the summer and when she came to London and stayed with me for a night she brought me this lovely raw chocolate they make right over there. It’s made by ‘The Raw Chocolate Pie company’ (that is a mouthful.. it’s a good thing it’s about chocolate) and they make raw chocolate which is dairy free, gluten free, soya free and it contains no refined sugar. She got me the peppermint one. I’m actually not a big fan of chocolate with a minty or citrus flavour, but I did want to try it and I loved that she brought it for me. It’s best kept in the fridge it say on the label, so when I tried a piece it was quite a firm texture. I really like the texture and you can taste that it’s raw. It’s nice and very filling (I only had a little piece), but I think in a different flavour it would be even better. They have a lot of flavours and you can find them all on their website. Later I also saw they sell a few at Portobello Wholefoods and I’m sure you can get them in other places too. Great chocolate and a lovely healthy snack.

ChOCO Dream

13499852_1178672795510155_944827911_oFor this recipe I was inspired by a Dutch cake, called ‘Arretjescake’. It’s actually with eggs and a lot of butter. It’s a very unhealthy cake, but super delicious. The recipe I made is not only vegan and super delicious, it’s also healthy. Or actually there is an option to make it all healthy. There are biscuits used in this cake. If you decide to make healthy biscuits before making this recipe, the whole cake would be healthy. The cake is very filling, that’s why it’s quite small. In case you have to treat a lot of people, you can always easily double the recipe. Use a little cake tin or any small dish, but if you double it, you can easily use a standard cake tin.
One of my aunts always made this recipe and whenever there was a party at her house, I always chose this cake. I could really get excited if I knew she made one. I hope you get just as excited after tasting it. It’s super easy, fast and does not require any baking. Everybody can make this!

Simply Heaven

13499836_1178672748843493_1426228282_oSimple and delicious. If this sounds good, then I’m sure you’ll love this recipe! Also it contains peanut butter.. do I need to say more? Chocolate and peanut butter.. I know it gets better and better. Milkshakes are a very good snack. And you can also drink them before or after a sweaty work out. This one especially is very good for that. It’s filling, but filled with energy. I actually made this recipe sort of by accident. I fancied a milkshake and got all the things I liked and could find and put it together. The result was so tasty that I decided to write it down so I can share it with you guys. I hope you’ll like it just as much as me. Enjoy!

Cookies And Scream

13453005_1168776799833088_537324334_oScream for cookies.. yes! You will scream for it like a toddler after you had some of the amazing creations from this bakery! I came across this bakery via Instagram and as soon as the words ‘vegan bakery’ appeared I was hooked. I mean.. who wouldn’t right? And if you take a look at what they make, boy!, it’s heaven on earth for sure. And if you think there is a lot of gluten and bad sugar going on here, you’re wrong. Because ‘Cookies and Scream’ are not only fully vegan, but everything is also gluten-free, low in fat, low in cholesterol and free from refined sugars. Did I mention the word ‘heaven’ yet? Oh yes I did, it just keeps popping up whilst writing this.

13410515_1168776789833089_1086190890_oThey have over 15 different kind of cookies and 5 different kind of brownies and this on top of a whole range of pies and donuts. To just name a few: Hot Mexican Cookies, Double Chocolate Chip Cookies, Chillin’ Coconut Cabanas, Gosh! Peanut Butter Brownies, Tofoofoo pie, Chocola donuts and so much more. These names are just mouth-watering by itself. Next to all their baked goodies, they also have a range of shakes. Does a ‘Salted Caramel’ shake sound good to you? Or what about a ‘The Gosh Brownie’ shake, where they actually mix in a brownie? I get it when you’re overly excited by now and want to go right this minute.
13410359_1168776793166422_1630156901_oIn that case, ‘Cookies and Scream’ are in a lovely location in Camden Town. Walking from the tube station, you walk towards the canal, cross it and turn left. You’ll see a ‘Cookies and Scream’ sign what brings you straight to the bakery. This also means it’ll be perfect for a little break whilst discovering the lovely Camden Town. They’re open 7 days a week from 10:00-18:00. But if you want to have a bit more choice, I recommend you to go on time and not last-minute as they often sell out or you can only choose between a ‘Salted Caramel Donut’ and a ‘Gosh! Peanut Butter Brownie’. Which in that case you just get them both, haha!

Though they are vegan and don’t use refined sugars etc. it doesn’t mean it’s healthy. It just means you can feel less guilty. Now get up and get your ass to the multi award-winning, most amazing bakery!

Graze boxes

13446076_1170204249690343_2129040016_oI do know the Graze boxes for a few years now and even subscribed to them for over a year. I got a box send to me every 2 weeks. And I must say, that was very exciting. It’s almost like you get a present twice a month! It had all sorts of things in there, but as you kind of decide yourself what is going to be in there it was always tasty. And they have this really good system, that every time you get a box you can rate the snacks afterwards. What means if you really don’t like something, you can ‘bin’ it. What means you’ll never get it again. And if you really like something, you give it your best like and that snack will appear more often. Great idea!
Graze started 8 years ago by 7 friends. They came up with this idea, eventually quit their jobs and started to make Graze boxes full-time. Amazing! One of the really nice things about Graze is that it’s all well organised. There is no hassle and you always get a lot of information, and things such as skewers, send with your snacks. They really thought about everything. And if it can’t get any better, all the materials they use you can recycle. Also you can get creative and make all nice things out of them. I’ve seen people make a little herb garden and I used the little containers to put paint in whenever me, and the kids I looked after at that time, decided to make some Picasso’s.
Not all snacks are vegan, but when you order a box, you can make sure that there are only vegan snacks coming to you. You can really all decide it yourself. If you don’t like coconut (which I can’t imagine), you can make sure nothing including coconut is sent to you. Like I said, it’s well organised. Each box contains 4 different kinds of snacks. And very handy is that the boxes fit in your mail box and so no 13445873_1170204136357021_254795103_ohassle there as well. You only have to be excited on the day the boxes arrive. And gosh I was.. together with the kids I was looking after, I always opened the box as soon as they arrived. It’s great to do it with kids btw, as snacks are a big part of their life, haha! Even better, in case you have kids yourself, there are special Graze kids boxes you definitely have to take a look at.

There are over a 100 snacks to choose from and a lot of that is vegan. If you sign up you get your first and your 5th box for free! Isn’t that a very welcoming gesture?! Very clever of them as well to give away free snacks. So for your 2 free boxes, you can go to the website and get started! The second step is to choose between the ‘variety box’, the ‘light box’ and the ‘protein box’. Then you fill in your details and when you’d like to receive your boxes. You can take a look at all the different snacks available and when you understand and finished the whole process, you can get excited for your first box to arrive. You can of course let them send it to your house, but it’s also a nice idea to let them send the boxes to your work, so you can share the snacks with your colleagues. Whatever you please.
Nowadays you can also get a few variants in the supermarket. Which I was pleasantly surprised by. It’s not a whole box, but the snacks are sold separately. They are a bit pricy, £1,25 per snack. Though it’s nice for a change. They are very tasty! Especially the ‘Smokehouse BBQ crunch’ was a real treat.

Do you know the Graze boxes? Have you tried them or are you very excited to get your first free box? Please let me know, show me your snacks or box creations by using #PlanetManel on Instagram. Thank you! X

The Grain Shop

13262154_1155878351122933_1153718204_oIf you know me a little bit, you know I love Portobello Road. And on Portobello Road, just a bit further down from the Westway there is a little take away place called ‘The Grain Shop’. The sign says vegetarian food, but more than half of it is vegan.
I can tell you to just go for their vegan brownie, but the rest of their food is very nice too. It reminds me a bit of a home made meal. Perfect for a day you don’t feel like cooking, but still crave a cosy dish. I must say that it took me a while to actually go in here. Not sure why, but I think it’s because of the atmoshpere. It looks a bit cold or something, while I think the outside is rather nice and authentic.

IMG_8454I’d recommend the potatoes and the lentils. But what I really love at The Grain Shop is their yummy selection of vegan cakes. They really have quite some options and out of that the brownie is my favourite. It’s not really a classic brownie, because it’s more like chocolate cake. But it’s huge, it has walnuts, it has chocolate icing, it’s chocolatey, it’s soft and it’s sticky when you take a bite. (I’m eating one whilst writing this.. Oops!) They also sell drinks. Coconut water, juices and they have quite a selection of the ‘Whole Earth’ soft drinks. I’m not crazy about soft drinks myself, but for everyone who is, this brand is all natural and much better for you than the extreme sugary ones. Oh and it’s organic, yay!

13288171_1155878337789601_1659524944_oYou can choose your food yourself. There are 2 container sizes you can choose from(+ an eating in and eating out price) and the only thing you have to do is tell them what you’d like to have in there. Later in the day there is less to choose form though. Which is a shame maybe, but I like it as it means there will be less waste.

The staff is always very friendly and helpful, what I really appreciate. It makes it fun to go there. It makes such a big difference i my opinion. It’s a very tiny place and though there are a few seats, I like to take my food home and enjoy it sitting in my window. Also because, though the food is really nice, it’s not the place to have a long lunch and chat. But the food is nice and after a lovely afternoon wandering around Portobello Road, it’s a lovely meal to take home so you can put you feet up, eat and relax.

13271425_1155878327789602_686034861_oDo you know The Grain Shop and did you try their food before? Are you going to try the brownie after reading this? Please let me know or show me by using #PlanetManel on Instagram. Thank you! X

The Not So Healthy Treats

13396549_1164889246888510_1944781319_oYes yes yes.. Sometimes it’s nice to eat something not so good. To treat your mouth I would say, because I don’t think the rest of your body experiences it as a treat. Haha! A lot of people still think that when you’re vegan you live on carrots and spinach. But vegan food can also be bad for you. There is a lot of bad vegan fast food available. But as long as you don’t make these your regular snacks I think it’s fine to once in a while have a naughty treat. Personally I have weeks and weeks where I dont eat anything bad and then I have a week where I eat a whole pack of oreo’s. I call it ‘balance’.. hehe..

13388834_1164889160221852_145501664_oI made a list of my favurite bad treats. Some are made vegan on purpose and some just happen to be vegan. Either way, it’s delicious and that without animal cuelty. It makes you think why on earth would we harm animals if it’s so easy to eat crualty free.

You can buy most of these treats in a regular (bigger) supermarkets, but for some you have to go to a health shop/whole foods shop, which is ironic. To make it easy to find, I’ll tell you where you can buy them. When I did a post about healthy treats, I also told you the price. But as the prices may vary, I chose not to do that this time. Non of these treats are crazy expensive and they’re quite easy to get. And last but not least.. They’re really worth trying! Yum!
