Pizza Express

I’ve been to Pizza Express quite a lot, but that is years ago. I was very excited to discover that they started offering vegan mozzarella. So I decided I needed to see this with my own eyes and very important too: taste this! I went to the Pizza Express in Camden. The day I went it was raining and as I hate umbrellas (cuz of loving the rain), I was a little soaked when I arrived. When I came in they stared at me like they didn’t know what to do with me. I wasn’t sure if this was because of being a little wet, or because they didn’t expect customers. It was just been 12:00, maybe a little early, but I always like to go on times it’s less busy, because then there is more time for answering my questions etc. I asked about the vegan options, but they didn’t really know what to say. So I chose a table and started to look at the menu myself.

There was a special vegan pizza, but you can swap ingredients around, until you have the pizza you like. This was the only thing the guy was able to tell me. Later I was told by somebody else that the special changes every 3-4 months and if it’s selling well, they stay on the menu. This made me decide to order this pizza, because we have to support vegan options (so you know what to order at Pizza Express now..haha!). It had onion, olives, artichoke, asparagus and the vegan mozzarella. It looked nice and as I love all these veggies, it was a good choice anyway. The pizza was tasty and I definitely enjoyed it, though it’s not a pizza I directly come back for. It’s perfect for if you’re going with somebody who isn’t vegan, because then you can still enjoy a good vegan pizza, whilst not have to go to a vegan place. I’m super happy that Pizza Express made this change and I really hope they keep at least one already vegan pizza on the menu. The pizza is not the only vegan things they have. They also have a salad called ‘Leggera Superfood Salad’ and this one is vegan too. I really want to try this one too on day. Anybody who had it already?

The Pizza Express in Camden is not really big, but it has nice big windows and the possibility to sit outside (when it’s not raining..). They also have a big mirror on one wall, I guess to make it look bigger. anyway.. it’s handy for if you want to check if there are any veggies stuck in your teeth, haha! Though I was pleased with my pizza, I thought the service here was really bad. I don’t know if all of them had a bad day or something, but nobody was really helpful. There was one guy who was new (his second day!), so I can’t blame him, but the rest had no menu knowledge. I only got short unsure answers, without a lot of information. I really had to pull it out of them and then they had to ask 3 times in the meantime. And there were some other things too, but let’s not be only negative, because there are a lot of Pizza Express restaurants and I’m sure this is not everywhere.

Square Root Soda Bar

I went to Camden to do some hotspot hunting. I had lunch at Club Mexicana and whilst I was waiting for my order to be made and whilst I was eating my burrito, I kept seeing people passing by with delicious looking lemonade. It was super hot that day and like every Saturday in Camden, there were like a billion people! A cool lemonade was very welcome and after eating a burrito with beans and rice it would be very refreshing. So I followed the people and not far from Cub Mexicana (a few stalls to the left) I saw a big queue. All people who had the same idea as me. It was called Square Root Soda Bar and they had a few types of soda drinks. I really liked their stall, with the painted wooden signs.

You could choose between a few types of sodas, but I went for the regular lemonade. I love lemonade, but I never have it unless I make it myself. Because there is a lot of sugar or sweetener used in them. Here at the Square Root Soda Bar they use sugar from beets in their lemonade, but unfortunately I couldn’t find anywhere how refined it was. All their sodas are hand-made though, in Hackney. It was a very tasty lemonade (and yay for the paper straws) and a perfect combination with my lunch. Exactly what I needed. Their flavours change regularly, depending what is in season, something I really like. On their website you can find all the different kind of flavours and also which one they are selling now.

WHO? Square Root Soda Bar.
WHERE? Unit 62, The Loft, Camden Lock Place, NW1 8AF.
CUISINE? Soda Bar.
VEGAN? Yes!
OVERALL? 7 (Very tasty and refreshing, just not sure how refined their sugar is.)

Club Mexicana

For Vegan food, you go to Camden! There are a lot of vegan places to get yummy food. I heard about ‘Club Mexicana’ a while ago and so I went to visit them last weekend. I didn’t know exactly where it was, but weird enough (because it’s not that easy to find) I just walked there like I knew. I must work like a magnet to vegan food. So for directions, I would say ‘follow your instincts’, haha! If you’re not very good at this, then let me explain. If you’re coming from the ug station, you turn right. You cross the bridge and then right after the bridge you turn left. Walk straight (don’t go up) and you’ll see a big tree next to a little walking bridge. It’s right around the corner from there, next to the water. I hope this will help you.

They have 3 things at Club Mexicana. This is actually quite nice, because it’s easier to choose this way. Although.. how do you choose between burritos, tacos and nachos? I guess it depends a little bit on your appetite. I went there for lunch, so I chose the burrito. It’s made with bbq pulled jackfruit, black beans, guacamole, salsa, pickled chillies and sour cream. All 100% vegan of course and they make everything from scratch. Because everything they have is vegan, there is no need to worry about substitutions or traces. I love it! The tacos are made with beer battered to-fish, chimichurri and also pickled chillies and sour cream. So are the nachos, but they also have some black beans, guacamole and cheese sauce. They are great for sharing. What would you pick?

I like their look. The bright pink really stands out in between all the other stalls. It looks summery and fresh. I love that they have a massive sign with 100% vegan! Could it be more clear? Actually the lady in front of me asked if there was any meat inside.. hehe.. oops! Because it’s a market stall, there are no places to sit per se. There are some (standing) tables across from them, but they are also used by people who’re getting things from other stalls and on a sunny weekend, it’s busy! I found a nice spot on a little wall, next to the water and enjoyed my burrito there. It was very yummy and super fresh and filling. Definitely a very good lunch, though I found the bbq pulled jackfruit a little sour. Some might like this, but it’s not my personal favourite. Next time I might try the nachos, they looked delicious too.
